According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva once went into a deep meditative trance for thousands of years. When he finally opened his eyes, tears of compassion and bliss fell upon the earth. Where those divine tears fell, Rudraksha trees grew. The Sanskrit name itself reveals this: Rudra (Lord Shiva) + Aksha (eyes or tears).

त्रिवक्त्रोयोहिरुद्राक्षः साक्षात् साधनदस्सदा |
तत्प्रभावाद्भवेयुर्वैविद्याः सर्वाः प्रतिष्ठिता ||

Meaning: “The Three Mukhi Rudraksha is a direct giver of spiritual accomplishment and growth. By its influence, all forms of knowledge become established and strengthened. “

The Teen Mukhi Rudraksha is believed to have originated from the third eye of Lord Shiva - the Agni Netra, or eye of divine fire. Unlike the two physical eyes that represent emotion and perception, the third eye symbolises higher consciousness, destruction of negativity, and spiritual awakening. Three Mukhi Rudraksha Dharan Vidhi

The Shiva Mahapurana is clear: wearing Rudraksha without a mantra is a serious error. The mantra is not optional. With sincerity and the right mantra, even the first wearing begins something real.

Step 1: Shuddhi (purification)

Wash the bead in Gangajal or clean water. Raw milk works too, and wait for it to dry naturally.

Step 2: Sankalp (intention)

Close your eyes while holding the bead in both hands with a pure mind.

Step 3: Mantra chanting

Recite the beej mantra of  Teen Mukhi Rudraksha 108 times :

ॐ क्लीं  नमः

Meaning: After reciting the beeja mantra, chant the Vedic mantra associated with Agni Dev, the ruling deity of the Teen Mukhi Rudraksha. It invokes and burns past karmas, negativity, fear, and inner impurities, helping the wearer to gain confidence and purity.

 ॐ नमस्ते अग्न ओजसे गृणन्ति देव कृष्टयः | अमैरमित्रमर्दय ||

Om Namaste Agna Ojase Grinanti Deva Krishtayah |

Meaning: O Agni, we bow to your divine strength. The enlightened beings praise your power. Destroy hostility, negativity, and all harmful forces around us.

Step 4: Wear it

• Best Day: Monday (Somvar), Sunday (associated with Lord Agni), Pradosh, Maha Shivaratri, and Shravan Somvar are considered especially auspicious for wearing the Three Mukhi Rudraksha.
• Thread: Silk or cotton thread is traditionally preferred for its sattvic nature. The bead can also be capped in copper, silver, or gold.

Difference Between Nepali and Indonesian Three Mukhi Rudraksha

Nepal is a special place because of Lord Shiva. From Mount Kailash to the Pashupatinath Temple, the Himalayan region has been connected to Lord Shiva for a very long time. This is why Rudraksha beads from Nepal are thought to be very spiritual. The place where Rudraksha beads grow. The divine cosmic energy they have is close to Lord Shiva himself and Nepal.

Nepalese Teen Mukhi Rudraksha beads are favoured more because of their shape and feel. They usually have lines for a thicker feel. In earlier times, Rudraksha beads were really big, which made it tough for people to wear them in daily use.

Now in 2026, it is easier to find smaller beads. You can find them in sizes like 9 mm,10 mm, and 11 mm. They are still special, and people like to wear them. Nepalese Three Mukhi Rudraksha beads are a choice.

Wearing a Rudraksha mala around your neck is considered a good way to wear it. Now that smaller Nepal beads are available, people can wear Nepalese Three Mukhi malas comfortably every day.

Rudraksha beads also grow in Indonesia. The climate and environment in Indonesia make the Rudraksha beads grow smaller and smoother compared to the ones in Nepal. These beads are not bad or fake; they are just different because they grew in a place with a different climate. Indonesian Rudraksha beads are still very special and have the spiritual energy, as the Nepal beads; they are just shaped differently by the land and climate of Indonesia.

Three Mukhi Rudraksha: Dos and Don’ts

The rules surrounding Rudraksha originate from two primary sources: the Shiva Mahapurana and the Shrimad Bhagavatam. The one rule that both scriptures agree on without any flexibility is the mantra chanting ‘ॐ क्लीं  नमः’ before wearing it every day. Everything else is open to interpretation.

The Shiva Mahapurana advises avoiding meat, alcohol, garlic, and onion. The Devi Bhagavatam says the bead's grace reaches even those who do not follow these restrictions. One speaks to the ideal, the other to the reality of ordinary life. Follow what your level of sadhana honestly allows.
