Why Bhasma From Kashi?
नागेन्द्रहाराय त्रिलोचनाय भस्माङ्गरागाय महेश्वराय।
नित्याय शुद्धाय दिगम्बराय तस्मै नकाराय नमः शिवाय॥
Salutations to Shiva, the great lord, who wears serpents as his garland, holds three eyes, and whose body is smeared with sacred bhasma.
No city belongs to Shiva the way Kashi does. It is called the gateway to moksha, where he is said to whisper the Tarak mantra to the dying so they are never born again. When Bhairava carried the sin of severing Brahma's head, no tirtha could free him, until he reached Kashi and the skull fell from his hand. And the old texts say the city does not even rest on earth, but on the tip of Shiva's trishul, untouched even when the universe dissolves in pralaya.
