Why Soil From Mount Kailash?
कैलासः पर्वतो रम्यो देवदानवसेवितः। तत्र तीर्थानि पुण्यानि मानसं च सरोवरम्॥
Kailash is the mountain that gods and demons alike bow before, where every water runs holy and the Manasarovar rests.
The soil in this mala's amulet comes from the land of Mount Kailash, the mountain Shiva has called home since before time was counted. This is not a place he visits. It is where he resides with Parvati, the still centre the whole tradition turns toward.
And no one has ever climbed Kailash. Out of reverence, its peak is left untouched to this day, which makes the soil from that land about as close to Shiva's own ground as a devotee can ever hold.
Now think of where the Rudraksha itself comes from. The bead was born from Shiva's tears, and the ones in this mala are the 5 Mukhi, Shiva Purana names Kalagni Rudra, Shiva himself. So the soil of his home, the tears from his eyes, and his own five faces all meet on one thread. Every part of this mala is Shiva himself.
The couplet says Shiva lives forever in the lotus of the heart. Now the earth of his mountain rests there too, worn close, carrying a little of Kailash with you wherever you go.
