The Origin of Do Mukhi Rudraksha

Where did the two-faced Rudraksha originate from? It’s the question that not so many people know the answer to. However, the Shiva Mahapurana says that Lord Shiva, who has three eyes, cried for compassion; the teardrops from all three eyes gave birth to different forms of Rudraksha beads.

Interestingly, the Do Mukhi Rudraksha beads originated from the teardrops fallen from the left eye of Shiva. These teardrops transformed into Rudraksha seeds, which eventually grew into a tree that produces Rudraksha beads. The two-faced Rudraksha is found mainly in Nepal and Indonesia regions, whereas the beads are healthier and more effective that come from Nepal. Although Indonesian Do Mukhi Rudraksha are found in abundance, the beads are very small, slightly fragile, and somewhat less effective spiritually.

The Story of Ardhanarishwara

The Do Mukhi Rudraksha represents the eternal union of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati, signifying the cosmic balance between the masculine and feminine. Hence, this form of the bead is called Ardhanarishwar (androgynous) Rudraksha.

According to ancient scriptures, a demon named Adi transformed himself into Maa Parvati to deceive Lord Shiva. However, Shiva quickly recognised the trick and defeated the demon. Upon seeing Shiva with another woman, Goddess Parvati was filled with rage and cursed Nandi for failing to guard against the intrusion of a foreign woman in the sanctum. As a result of this curse, Nandi was turned into a lifeless stone.

In her anger, Parvati contemplated suicide, but Lord Brahma intervened and redirected her fierce energy into the form of the goddess Kali. Once Parvati regained her composure, Lord Brahma blessed both her and Shiva. He decreed that they would be united in such a way that they could never be separated again. This united form became known as 'Ardhanarishwar,' symbolising the essential balance of male and female energies, depicted as half man and half woman.

The Vedas highlight the coexistence of male and female qualities in the world, as expressed in the hymn ‘Agnishomatmakam Jagat.’ This verse illustrates that the fire element (Agni), representing the male, is found in a woman’s menstrual flow, while the moon element (Soma), representing the female, is present in a man’s sperm. Together, these two forces give rise to Kama, or desire, which is fundamental to creation in the universe. Ultimately, the unification of Shiv and Shakti is essential, demonstrating that true power comes from their harmonious collaboration.

धारणादर्धनारीशः प्रीयते तस्य नित्यशः ||

Meaning: The two-faced, or Do Mukhi, Rudraksha is a form of Ardhanarishwar. If a person adorns the Do Mukhi Rudraksha, the divine Ardhanarishwar form of Lord Shiva gets pleased and gives the person his blessings.

Meaning: The Two Mukhi Rudraksha is called Devdeveshwara, the one who grants all a person's wishes and desires. It especially forgives one’s sin, such as the cow slaughter.

Nepal vs Indonesia: The Origin, Quality, and Other Specifications of Do Mukhi Rudraksha

The Do Mukhi Rudraksha grows primarily in Nepal and Indonesia, together accounting for 95% of the world's Rudraksha supply. Nepal itself produces roughly 25% of the global yield, while Indonesia accounts for nearly 70%, which directly explains the significant price difference between the two origins.

Nepal Do Mukhi beads grow in the cool, high-altitude Himalayan foothills, within Nepali districts of Khandbari, Sankhuwasabha, and the Arun Valley. Due to the cold mountain weather of Nepal, the Rudraksha beads grow slowly, but they produce larger sizes (nearly 18-25 mm), heavier and with more boldly etched lines or faces than the Indonesian ones. This is one of the reasons why Nepal Rudraksha shows a positive result within a few days or two weeks.

On the other hand, the Do Mukhi beads grow faster but smoother, lighter, and smaller in size (8 to 14 mm) in Indonesia's warm, tropical climate across Java, Bali, and Sumatra. Being with a gentler energy, these Rudraksha beads take nearly 3 to 4 months to provide long-term benefits.

Moreover, both varieties of the Rudraksha beads are structurally identical, and when the two are entered for X-ray or scan, they're both equally authentic per their expressions and origins. And they are considered almost equally sacred.

Dos

• Wear with the beej mantra ॐ नमः or ॐ नमः शिवाय
• Devi Bhagavatam says that one must wear it at all times, including sleep and meals
• Keep it in direct contact with the skin
• Oil lightly with mustard or sandalwood oil once per week
• Place it on the puja altar when not wearing
• Replace the thread it’s beaded in every six months to regain Rudraksha’s energy
• Perform panchamrit abhishek on Shivaratri and Pradosh Vrat.

Don'ts

• Do not wear it as an accessory of fashion; otherwise its effect will be gone
• Do not expose it to soap, shampoo, or chemical perfumes
• Do not share the Rudraksha you wear with anyone, and vice versa
• Do not wear a bead that has cracked naturally
• Do not leave it carelessly in bags or drawers, or in an impure place
• Do not wear over-thick fabric away from the skin
• Avoid tamasic food while wearing Rudraksha if you’re serious about sadhana.
