According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva once went into a deep meditative trance for a thousand years. When he finally opened his eyes, tears of compassion and bliss fell upon the earth. Where those divine tears fell, Rudraksha's tears grew. The Sanskrit name itself reveals this: Rudra (Lord Shiva) + Aksha (tears).

Step 1: Shuddhi (Purification)

Wash the bead in Gangajal or clean water. Raw milk works too, and wait for it to dry naturally.

Step 2: Sankalp (Intention)

Hold the bead in both hands, close your eyes, and state your intention with pure devotion.

Step 3: Chant the Mantra

Chant the beeja mantra of Gyarah Mukhi Rudraksha 108 times:

ॐ ह्रीं हुं नमः

Then chant the mantra of Lord Hanuman, the ruling deity of the Eleven Mukhi Rudraksha. This mantra invokes the Ekadash Rudra, the combined strength, wisdom, and fearlessness of the eleven forms of Shiva, and prepares the bead for daily wear with full divine intention:

11 Mukhi Rudraksha: Dos and Don'ts

The rules surrounding Rudraksha originate from two primary sources: the Shiva Mahapurana and the Shrimad Bhagavatam. The one rule both texts agree on without any flexibility is the mantra: chant ॐ ह्रीं हुं नमः before wearing it every day. Everything else is open to interpretation. This does not.

On food, the two scriptures differ. The Shiva Mahapurana advises avoiding meat, alcohol, garlic, and onion. The Devi Bhagavatam says the bead's grace reaches even those who do not follow these restrictions. One speaks to the ideal, the other to the reality of ordinary life. Follow what your level of sadhana honestly allows.
