The Origin of 10 Mukhi Rudraksha

According to the Shiv Mahapurana, Ten Mukhi Rudraksha is believed to have emerged from Lord Shiva’s eyes and is also associated with the Surya Netra (right side eye) of Lord Shiva. The tree that produces it, Elaeocarpus ganitrus, grows across the Himalayan belt and parts of Southeast Asia.

10 Mukhi Rudraksha beads are originally sourced from Nepal, India, and Indonesia. In India, we obtain Das Mukhi Rudraksha beads from Uttarakhand, Assam, and nearby Himalayan regions, while Indonesian beads come from Java and Bali. Indonesian beads are naturally smaller, lighter, and smoother in appearance; hence, they have a slow effect on wearing. Meanwhile, Nepali 10 mukhi rudraksha beads are bigger and thicker in size and shape, so they are believed to bring fast and accurate results when worn.

The wearer, having faith, can increase the receptivity of Lord Vishnu’s blessings and be protected from negative energies.

The Sacred Number Ten: Vishnu

Ten is not just the number of faces on this bead. In Hinduism, ten represents completeness, protection in all directions, and sustaining order of the universe itself. Details of which are given below:

10 Dikpalas: The universe is traditionally guarded by divine protectors stationed in every direction: Indra in the East, Agni in the Southeast, Yama in the South, Nirrti in the Southwest, Varuna in the West, Vayu in the Northwest, Kubera in the North, Ishana in the Northeast, Brahma above and Ananta below. The 10 Mukhi Rudraksha carries the collective protection of all ten directions.

10 Avatara: It represents the descendants of Bhagwan Vishnu: Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha and Kalki.

10 Indriya: Or, the ten faculties of human action and perception. The scriptures speak of ten indriyas (senses), five Jnanendriyas and five karmendriyas. The 10 Mukhi Rudraksha represents mastery over both action and perception, bringing steadiness to the senses and calmness to the mind.

What Do Hindu Scriptures Say About 10 Mukhi Rudraksha?

The spiritual essence of ten Mukhi Rudraksha is also mentioned in the two most authoritative scriptural sources, verses from which are mentioned ahead:

दशवक्त्रस्तु देवेशः साक्षाद्देवो जनार्दनः |
ग्रहाश्चैव पिशाचाश्च वेताला ब्रह्मराक्षसाः |
पन्नगाश्चोपशाम्यन्ति दशवक्त्रस्तु धारणात् || –(Devi Bhagwatam)

The ten-faced Rudraksha is the Supreme Lord, the very personification of Lord Janardana (Vishnu). By wearing it, all malefic planets (Grahas), ghosts (Pishachas), spirits (Vetalas), Brahma-Rakshasas, and Serpents (Pannagas) are pacified.

The ten-faced (10-mukhi) Rudraksha is known to have the ten directions as its presiding deities. There is no doubt that by wearing it, the wearer brings joy and satisfaction to the ten quarters (directions).

O Maheshani, Janardana (Vishnu) himself is ten-faced.

The ruling deity of 10 Mukhi Rudraksha is Janardana Vishnu, the sustainer of cosmic order and the protector of truthfulness. As per the Rudrakshajabalopanishad, it is also blessed by Yamraj, the God of death. How to Wear 10 Mukhi Rudraksha

Step 1: Firstly, sprinkle some Gangajal on your body.

Step 2: If you are at home, then place the Rudraksha in front of Lord Shiva's picture or otherwise in a plate facing towards Shiva's Side.

Step 3: Worship the Rudraksha with Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra; also offer dhoop and flowers to Lord Shiva.

Step 4: Hold Rudraksha in your hands and recite the Beej Mantra "ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय" ("Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya")

Difference Between Nepali and Indonesian 10 Mukhi Rudraksha

Nepal: Regarded as one of the holiest lands of Shiva. It carries the Himalayan belt where Nepali Rudraksha trees grow; here the Rudraksha have a very deep association with Tapasya, reunification and divine protection.

The 10 Mukhi Rudraksha, connected with Vishnu’s preserving force and the guardians of the ten directions, is believed to absorb the stillness and spiritual intensity of the Himalayan belt.

Nepal-origin 10 Mukhi beads are known for their larger size, stronger density, and deeply defined natural grooves, whereas Indonesian beads grow mainly in Java and Bali at lower altitudes and in a different climate. They are also genuine Rudraksha beads but naturally smaller, lighter, and smoother in texture. Their Mukhis are usually thinner and shallower compared to Nepal beads.

10 Mukhi Rudraksha: Dos and Don'ts

Wearing the 10 Mukhi Rudraksha is considered auspicious, but it must be done properly. Also, there are some limitations on what to do and what you should not do when you’re wearing the 10 Mukhi Rudraksha mala/bracelet:

Dos

• Before wearing, chant Om Namah Bhagvate Vasudevaya.
• Never wear the Rudraksha without chanting the mantra.
• Can be worn on the neck, chest, or right wrist.
• Do not exchange your Rudraksha with others.
• Do keep the bead in direct contact with the skin.
• Do not expose it to soap, shampoo, or chemical perfumes
• Apply Sandalwood or sesame oil lightly once a month.

Don'ts

• Do not wear a bead that has cracked naturally.
• Store respectfully in the puja ghar when not in use.
• Do not throw casually into bags, drawers, or unclean places.
• Replace the thread periodically once in three months.
• Avoid tamsic habits and intoxication while wearing.
• Perform abhishek on Ekadashi, Maha Shivaratri, and Vishnu- related festivals.
• Do not wear purely as fashion jewellery without reverence.
